Description
Saudi Arabia: arming to the teeth The United States has proposed a landmark $60 billion aircraft deal with Saudi Arabia, the Americans' largest weapons sale ever, ostensibly to shore up the defenses of the Gulf's Arab states against the military threat from an Iran. But to get the planned sale of advanced combat aircraft and helicopter gunships through the US Congress, where the powerful Israeli lobby has thwarted such ground-breaking arms sales to Arabs states in the past, President Barack Obama's administration had to pledge not to provide the Saudis with long-range precision weapons which the Israelis complain could threaten the Jewish state. The United States has never committed to such an expensive arms buildup for an ally before. But the massive arms deal reflects a significant change in US strategy in the region by confronting the Islamic republic through allies and proxies rather than deploying American forces already stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in sore need of refurbishment.
